Respectfully, I would strongly suggest — urge — that any individual related to, involved with and/or assisting John McCain in his determining a Vice Presidential running mate, as well as John McCain himself, take the time to view this — all segments — in its entirety. Then decide. I believe that a decision will be self evident. Thank you. Ted (6/19/08)

Wow… she didn’t say much. She mostly sat by and watched the other two go after each other — good move. But in a one-on-one debate, that’s not going to be possible. Looks like you had a sitting governor nobody liked, and the other gentleman didn’t come off as very appealing either.

I was impressed with Sarah Palin’s ability to refocus her back biting opponents on the questions at hand from the moderator. She was more in control of the discussion than was the moderator. I like her ability to disagree agreeably! I like the way she gave the moderator and other candidates the respect of looking at them when they spoke and that she often acknowledged hearing what they said before expressing her own opinion which is an important and positive technique in leadership. She is strong while being respectful and trustworthy.

I also noticed her opponents diminished her abilities and experience to be Governor of the State of Alaska. They were talking down to her like she was an inferior or child at the table; but it did not work and made them look small after hearing what she had to say and how she composed herself as compared to the opponents. She was the experienced adult at the table of back biting egos! She looked graceful, knowledgeable and experienced. One more thing: The moderator was acting as a professional - unlike our National biased media.

They were wrong about Sarah because she is now the Governor and successfully running the State of Alaska! Go Sarah!

the McCain campaign pulling the gender card on this one will be worn out very quickly…besides, Ms. Palin says she had tough skin so she can handle Biden right?

I agree the other gentleman, John Binkely, didn’t come off as very appealing. He had the Al Gore appeal. But he was actually new the best informed. She benefitted from the real fight being between the Governor and Binkely. It worked! Infact, Bailey wasn’t asked serious policy questions.

Scary that Sen. McCain believes this woman, who is a lovely person, is qualified to run the USA if something should happen to him. Now, please understand that I was supporting John McCain and now I am at a loss. I’m not happy about my choices and I am surprised McCain made such a reckless choice here. There is just no way she is ready for the national scene as the #2 person in power. How truly bizarre.

Sarah Palin - 2006 Republican Candidate Roundtable Debate…

The Palintology blog has video of an Alaskan Republican Roundtable debate involving some of the Republican candidates for governor back in 2006.  Palin, then-Governor Frank Murkowski, and former Alaska State Senator John Binkley are the participants….

Palin did an amazing job of sitting there and playing schoolmarm. “Now, now children. Be nicer to each other so the kids watching at home don’t get upset. Have a graham cracker!”

She also did an amazing job of not offering policy insight. The former governor came across as grumpy, but it was obvious he knew what he was talking about.

Palin is a cute, bubbly lightweight. Joe Biden is going to have chunks of her in his stool by the time they’re done debating foreign policy. She’s going to need a much broader knowledge than “Alaska is near Russia and borders Canada.”

Then again, someone is going to have to teach her what the VP does anyway. She’s on record this week as saying she doesn’t know.

And this was the best a septuagenarian cancer patient applying for the highest-stress job in the world could find. She’s nowhere near ready to step into the Presidency if McCain keels over. Nice job, pander bear.

I have been grasping every piece of evidence I can gather on Sarah Palin since Senator McCain’s announcement of her being his VP choice on Friday. I consider myself a very broad minded person and therefore do my own investigations and questioning. In this short period of time, I find Sarah Palin one of the most admirable political icons in this country. I would right at this point vote for her as president. I fully understand how McCain weeded through his choices and found this person who has not only the true feel for her fellow American’s, but also the guts to stand up for what she believes in and dare anyone to try to back her down. I smile when I hear the few things on the media that may try to come up to bite her. I believe she may be one of the few people that can bite back. I say this. “For the first time in my adult life, I am proud to vote for a person with such a outstanding character, belief and moral standing, and proud she is an American and knows what being an American entitles us all” I say VOTE FOR JOHN MCCAIN AND SARAH PALIN ON NOVEMBER 4TH!!! Or be prepared to be sold out.

  12. Wendy on September 1st, 2008 6:44 pm

I spent this weekend researching Sarah Palin and the ending result is she makes me proud and so does McCain as he selected wisely. I look forward to hearing more from them both over the next few weeks. They already have my vote, but the more I hear, the more I can share with others of the great things they will do when elected as President and Vice President. Go McCain/Palin!!!!

  13. Greg Marlowe on September 1st, 2008 11:30 pm

Re: “Joe Biden is going to have chunks of her in his stool by the time they’re done debating foreign policy. ”

Joe Biden is going to spend half the evening trying to explain his statement made in Iowa about the dire consequences for Iraq if the country was not divided
into three separate states Bagdad would fall like Saigon by 2009.

Governor Palin will produce that statement and put this question to Biden:

“Senator Biden, in September of 2007–a little more than a year ago–stated on “Meet the Press”–and I quote that he “Absolutely, positively, unequivocably
believed that within two years–which would be by next September–that
the world would see images of Baghdad with people hanging” onto “helicopters just like in Vietnam.” I would like to know–and I think Americans would like to know–if the senator still is certain of Baghdad’s imminent fall.”

Biden, of course, will attempt to counter that statement which his qualification
that he said “If we don’t change course” to which Palin will say, “And by ‘changing course’ I would like to point out that the senator’s plan was to divide Iraq into three separate states–a plan found universally abhorrent to Kurds, Sunnis and Shiites.”

“That’s true,” Biden will say.” But the plan had overwhelming bipartison support…

“But one,” Palin will suggest, ” that neither Senator Obama or Senator Mccain supported.

And then a little later–or perhaps sooner–Biden will be asked by one of the panelists,

“Subsequent to 9/11, while meeting with committee members you suggested
that America needed to show the Arab world that Americans were not bent on destroying it and that a no-strings-attached check offered to Iran for $200,000,000 would seem like a feasible gesture of good will. Would you
still make such an offer to Iran for diplomatic ends?”

Oh yeah. Sarah Palin has a lot to fear from this guy.

  20. Shawn on September 3rd, 2008 11:18 pm

I am only 17 years old, so forgive me if I say anything that can be proven false, but I really think that Palin was the best choice possible for McCain. Unlike a lot of politicians, she’s naturally compassionate, freindly, but strong. She’s willing to go against her own party for the sake of the people, AND seems to truely understand the lives of average citizens.
She also seems very smart, and will bring a fresh point of view behind McCain. It is a good match, because the person in charge is someone with a lot of experience, but then you have the second-in-command who’s young, may not be very experienced at this point, but not to the point where she is naive. Again, I think she’ll bring a fresh point of view in Washington and won’t follow the path of the usual politicians.
After watching this 2006 Debate video, I can also prove my thought that she also is very straightforward. Most politicians always seem to avoid tough questions and like to “spin” it as some people call it. Well, she’s far from that. She awnsers quick but strong. THAT is what the White House needs, we don’t need a usual “politician.” She’s not from Washington, and I think that’s what will make her different.
Anyway, I’ve gone on long enough, I guess to put it shortly, I think if they get elected, she will be a great VP, and I’m looking forward to her future in politics.

  21. D. Knox on September 4th, 2008 6:04 am

She’s honest, she has personal integrity, she is ethical, she carries an iron fist in a velvet glove.

I’ll vote for Sarah Palin and John McCain in 2008. I pray that she picks a good VP candidate in 2012 - even if she didn’t (which I could not imagine) I’ll still vote for her for President in 2012.

My Goodness, Alaska has given us treasure in dollars and oil, but the greatest treasure they have ever given the USA is Sarah Palin!

    OK Republicans

If she’s so great, why is she not going out on all
the Sunday Morning talk shows, MTP, FTN Stepanopolous
    Chris Matthews like EVERYONE ELSE??
    No teleprompter, no script!!

This is day 8 since her rollout, not one meaningful interview!

What does it naturally tell you when someone does not want to answer tough questions??

You’re running for Vice President of the United STates!
    And essentially PRESIDENT!!!!!

America needs a job interview from you.
So far (Day 8 Saturday) she has not showed up for that unvarnished
    interview.

So to Sarah Palin and all Republicans on this board.

    Either PUT UP-OR SHUT UP!!!!

If McCains a POW she’s an MIA!!

I have a problem with Gov. Palin. At first I liked her but as I have been reading more and more I have some problems. As a Christian there are a variety of principals that I try to live by. Palin hits on many of those prinicpals but the one theme I am seeing is she is NOT telling the truth on things. Maybe it is the speech writers who are fibbing but she is repeating them. She never sold an airplane on ebay and the the sale never made the state of Alaska money. It lost money. She also has no foriegn policy experience. I wish McCain would have picked Mike Huckabee. He is a conservative Christian, preacher, and very experienced for the job. This pick was 100% polticial and I don’t think it is good for our country to have a potential VP with no experience. At this point I am not voting in the November election.

If you would bother to watch the news, she is on the campaign trail with McCain. I would imagine she will have plenty of time to come on the news shows. Sounds as if you’re one of many people who are frightened of her.

    LOL at scared libs!

  27. Jade on September 6th, 2008 6:11 pm

I agree with Tom. Love Palin so far, but it looks like she’s hiding.

They’ll say she’s late for her job interview, they’ll question why, and it gives the left plenty of time to fill the gap with all the so-called scandals brewing…

She should have been ready on DAY ONE.

  28. Tom H. on September 6th, 2008 6:13 pm

    That’s not an answer!
Being on the campaign trail is totally

The answer is she is not ready for tough
    questions.

Would you hire someone who didn’t show up
    for a job interview???

She is not ready to be VP of the US let alone

  29. Jake on September 6th, 2008 6:16 pm

    @ John-

You are right John, I am scared of Sarah Palin. I will tell you why:

    • a belief that women who are raped or are victims of incest should not have a choice about carrying these babies to term.

    • she was not capable of running her tiny town without a city administrator (a position that previously the mayor occupied) , but she is supposed to be qualified to run the United States

    • she believes the iraq war is gods will, and is looking forward to the ‘end times.’

    • she has consistently lied on the campaign trail - the ‘ebay profit’ was from a plane not old on ebay, and sold at a half million dollar loss. What was the plane being used for primarily? Transporting prisoners out of state.

    • she has been overtly racist and sexist in public. “Sambo beat the bitch?” WTF is that?

    • she is under multiple ethics violation investigations

    • she wanted to ban books at her local library, and when the librarian refused, she tried to have her fired (pattern of abuse of power anyone?)

    • I will not go into the baby stuff, but we have not heard the last of that lie- at the very least, she endangered her newborn by not seeking appropriate medical care (aka ‘fundie abortion’ attempt)

    • and not least: Dobson and Cheney pull the strings.

So you are right. I am scared. You should all be scared. She is very much more frightening that the oogedy boogedy scary mixed race democrat.

  30. FrenchieCat_DU on September 6th, 2008 6:51 pm

Bottom line is Palin stole the show. Obama is now about as interesting as reruns of Gilligan’s Island.

By the time Palin does an interview every household in America will watch it, perfect timing for the General Election.

Obama was a rock star in February, he is now a passing fad…playing the race card again isn’t going to work.

What to do, what to do…Oh dear!!

    Tom said:

    Should read:

Would you hire someone who has 1) never performed most of the duties of the job, 2) flubbed up so badly in previous jobs that she is under investigation, 3) is so unprepared for off-the-cuff questions that she has to study before answering, and 4) dictates to you when the interview will be …. ???

I wouldn’t hire such a person for dog catcher, let alone the most important job in the world.

  32. Doug on September 6th, 2008 7:00 pm

    An Alaskan Speaks!!!

So, I have watched Sarah Palin’s “meteoric rise” to VP candidate from her Mayoral win in Wasilla to the surprise announcement. Let’s get a few things straight. To say Sarah “cleaned up” politics in Alaska is ridiculous. Alaskan politics have ALWAYS been slimy, we are 3000 miles away from the lower 48, and even though voter registration does not show it, we are red as red can be. You know, we have NEVER had a U.S. Senator or Representative that was not APPOITNED FOR THEIR FIRST TERM! How is that for shocking?

The Republicans up here have done what they pleased for a long, long, time. When Palin won governership, she beat Frank Murkowski who had an 8% approval rating. This is due to the fact that when he vacated his Senate seat to become governor, he APPOINTED HIS DAUGHTER LISA MUKRKOWSKI to the United States Senate! Our Senators are arguable 100 of the most powerful people in the world, and he appointed his daughter in an extreme show of nepotism. He also wanted to tap the Permanent Fund, set up by Jay Hammond for the people of Alaska as compensation for taking a portion of our state and handing it over to the oil companies for Frank’s own purposes. He bought a private jet for himself despite being told NO emphatically by the legislature. Frank was so unpopular, my bird dog could have given him a run for the money in the primaries.

Some more REAL info. The image of Alaskans that the media protrays is a huge population of fiercly independent people who eschew government help. The reality is, we are the most government encumbered state in the Union. Oil drilled on Federal lands, the military, and guiding and fishing on federal land and waters are our top economies. We are not joined to the feds by an umbilical cord, we are Siamese twins with the Feds. Without Federal monies, Alaska would cease to exist in the format that it does today.

How might you ask is Ted STeven’s so popular even with corruption charges against him? How can the Republicans be in control when they are so corrupt you ask? Let me tell you, a common saying up here is “Stevens and Young bring home the BACON!” Yes fellow bloggers, Alaskan’s like their pork, we live and die by our pork, and having the most senior Senator in the nation ensures we get our Pork.

Sarah is no different. When it comes time to get some Pork, Sarah orders BACON, HAM, AND SAUSAGE! She knows where her bread is buttered, and she gets more than our fair share.

I don’t dislike Sarah as a governor, she has done okay. In this Alaskan’s opinion, I find her woefully unqualified to be Vice President. You realize that 30% of all VPs have ended up in the President’s position, don’t you? Some say “she has more executive experience than Obama”, which is true in a way, but it is intellectually dishonest.

That arguement reminds me of an old Cheers episode with Cliff Clavin playing Jeopardy. Cliff’s final answer to a question was “WHAT ARE THREE PEOPLE WHO HAVE NEVER BEEN IN MY KITCHEN?” Yes, you all sound like Mr. Clavin when you compare a constitutional lawyer, Presdient of the Harvard Law Review (top school in the country), and a State and U.S. Senator to a governor of a state with less people than what most would consider a “medium” sized city, it’s kind of dishonest. The mayor of Colorado Springs manages just as many people, and probably more problems.

For me, it comes down to this. The VP is historically used as a foregin policy negotiator, and I keep picturing in my mind Vladimir Puting, the ex-KGB officer, Judo expert, and bomber pilot, the most dangerous man in the world on one side of the table, and our Alaskan self-proclaimed “Hockey Mom” on the other. Obama may pull punches, but Putin will not. If that thought does not keep you up at night…..

Anyway, in this Alaskan’s opinion, Palin is a decent small state governor with very limited experience, and if Bush had picked her for VP, I might feel differently. However, this is a 72 year old man with noted health problems and he is putting an undereducated and underexperienced person the next in line to seccesion to the most powerful office in the world. I cannot vote for the McCain/Palin ticket because of it.

  33. ron on September 6th, 2008 7:08 pm

Sarah, You ought to go on Meet the Press and show them what you are made of!!!! By not taking any questions, they just get to say that you are chicken, or not prepared. Show them you will fight for us. GO Sarah

  34. tbyg on September 6th, 2008 7:11 pm

    >>Scary that Sen. McCain believes this woman, who is a lovely person, is qualified to run the USA if something should happen to him.

I don’t think he does think that.

    a) I think she was foisted on him by the people who are *really* running the show

    b) I don’t think he cares if she is qualified. I think he just cares if he wins.

After what the Bush campaign did to him in 2000, and him coming back for “the hug” and podium-sitting with his tail between his legs, I said “that man wants to be President *way* too bad.”

  35. Laruie H on September 6th, 2008 7:16 pm

Let’s talk about Gov. Palin’s “integrity:”

Falsely claims to have said “thanks but no thanks” on the Bridge to Nowhere, but kept over $220 million of our tax money.

As Mayer of Wasilla (pop. <9000), hired a Washington lobbyist and travelled to DC to bring back millions of pork/”earmarks”, now campaigning against them

Stans by while McCaim falsely claims she sold the state jet on ebay “for a profit;” actuallys, she sold it at a huge loss to a campaign supporter.

Criticised Hillary Clinton for “whining” and not wanting the same scrutiny as male candidates, but now screams “sexism!” about any questions and hasn’t given a substantive interview since being selected by McCain

  36. TorchTheWitch on September 6th, 2008 7:32 pm

“What a babe… No one can say McCain doesn’t know how to decorate an office.”

According to your bizzaro statement, Al, you’d vote for Obama had he taken on the latest Penthouse Playmate of the year as his running mate… after all, that would be one heck of a more appealing “office decoration” (one step away from control of the nuclear football mind you) by your standards.

Good grief! What are you, 12?

  37. Laruie H on September 6th, 2008 7:35 pm

This is a clip from a recent Guardian column that says a lot about Palin’s “values:”

The casualties scattered along Palin’s path continue to mount. Lyda Green, a neighbour of Palin’s in Wasilla, has just become the latest. She is stepping down as a state senator after 14 years.

Green is the leader of the Republicans in the Alaskan senate and an old-style fiscal conservative. She voted against several of the governor’s most important initiatives over the past two years, including a move to increase taxes on the big oil and gas companies. Green was surprised by the reprisals that followed. “I found early on that if you disagreed with her it was not taken as a disagreement with policy, but a personal disagreement.”

First came the embarrassment of a radio interview between Palin and a local rightwing shock-jock in which the interviewer called Green a bitch and a cancer within the party. Palin’s response on air? She laughed.

“She knew I’m a cancer survivor - she sent me flowers,” Green says. “That was a very lacklustre moment.”

  38. Al on September 6th, 2008 8:12 pm

What does the VP do? Anyone? Please tell me. Palin was clearly speaking with tongue firmly in cheek. The VP has always been looked upon as largely a ceremonial position. Who really considers this an argument against her?

  39. palin on September 6th, 2008 8:27 pm

Disgusting Democratic Underground spamming this board, troling where they are not welcome.

Doesn’t surprise me as the only way they play is by cheating. They play the race, gender card any chance hey get. Use proud soldiers in their attacks on GOP to smear other soldiers. Sneak into conventions to protest with fake credentials…etc.

    Cheating is bad mmmmkay.

What does the VP do? Well, dang, Al… I’m sure glad you’re only 12 and not old enough to vote. Then again, even my 7 year old nephew knows what the VP does and also knows that Cheney sure hasn’t been doing largely ceremonial anything, and the importance of having someone who knows what the heck they’re doing sitting in the second chair other than looking like a “babe” of an “office decoration”.

  42. Mary Madison on September 6th, 2008 11:51 pm

I am all for Sarah Palin but I have some serious worries now about her ability to speak with reporters. I like her because I think we need some young blood in the Republican party and is quite the contrast to the old looking John McCain. I think she has some tough questions to answer about the ethics violations, her judgement on the teaching abstinance only rather than sex education and this Trooper Gate thing. Maybe there are nothing to these but she needs to come out in the media for some one on one interviews and dispell these myths.

  43. Editor on September 7th, 2008 1:42 am

Hi Mary, I’m ready for Sarah to “Meet the Press” as well and I have no doubts she’ll do fine when she does. I’m guessing that the McCain campaign is doing some heavy duty schooling for Sarah before they push her out there all alone. But Sarah is exremely intelligent and gathers/processes information very quickly so I don’t think it will be long before we hear from her and she’ll done just fine.
